Runners Recovery Workshop

This 1.5 hour workshop will explore the sensory motor system and its role in recovery for runners who often experience chronic muscular tension from overuse or as a result of injury.
You will learn specific release techniques called Pandiculations that you can do yourself to address tight calf muscles, hamstrings,hips, lower back, neck and shoulders.
They are not exercises in the traditional way a “therapist” may prescribe and they do not require any special piece of equipment other than your own very specialized brain which we know is the only reason your muscles contract via the sensory motor system. Make lasting changes to how you recover, reset and look after your body for a life of pain free running.
This workshop is on a sliding scale of what you can afford. We want it to be as accessible to all as possible so we ask for a payment between £5.00 and £15.00 that you can comfortable afford.
This workshop operates a no refund policy. In the event of cancellation, a credit will be applied to use towards  online Pilates or Somatics group classes.


Somatic Movement for Scoliosis

This workshop addresses scoliosis and offers effective, non-invasive techniques for changing and improving it. We will celebrate our curves, improve our relationship to our bodies, and explore the natural ability of the brain and nervous system to change itself, towards more mobility, sensation, control, and less pain.

Group 1: students with scoliosis. This workshop offers somatic self care techniques specific to your needs, to improve scoliosis and its issues. Includes all of day 1, afternoon of day 2. You must have at least an intro to this work. See Intro workshop below. You will need to fill out an evaluation form available on the website.

Group 2: somatic movement teachers and practitioners in training mod 1-3. Offers somatic strategies for teaching and working with scoliosis, improving assessment skills. All of day 1 & 2.

Group 3: Clinical somatic practitioners or clinical students post module 4. Offers mentoring time on this subject in terms of your hands on techniques, assessment skills, and ongoing strategies for your clients. All of day 1-3. Day 3 involves observation of Laura working with 3 clients, with Q and A and practice time with colleagues following each session.

Intro workshop: Friday evening Aug 17, 6:30-8:00 PM at MI Pilates studio for students new to this work. Discount cost for workshop participants. Also open to the public. Limited space. Please register early via the website.

Laura M Gates is a Certified Hanna Somatic Educator (CHSE) and Clinical Somatic Educator (CCSE) and practitioner based in New York City and Averøy, Norway. As a former professional dancer, she toured internationally with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Co in the 70s and 80s and earned an MFA degree in dance from Bennington College. She brings over 40 years experience as a movement educator to her work and studied kinesthetic anatomy with celebrated master teacher Irene Dowd in NYC. She was certified by both Somatic Systems Institute, Northampton, MA and Novato Institute, CA. She currently assists Martha Peterson, CHSE, director, and the Essential Somatics team, training clinical practitioners and somatic movement teachers internationally. Laura’s own journey with scoliosis has brought her to this excellent work and developing scoliosis specific strategies.

MI Pilates welcomes Movement Practioner Sara Pugh.

Sara Pugh

Sara has a background in genetics, biochemistry and biophysics. Having completed a PhD in 2006 she left the field of science to pursue a career in movement and manual therapies and has never looked back.

Keen on sport Sara played competitive hockey, football  and squash. She also practiced Karate for 8 years and Thai boxing for 6 years.

Sara is comprehensively trained in both Pilates Matwork and Studio (Cadillac, Reformer, Chair & Barrel) and has completed the extensive training with both Polestar Pilates UK and Body Control and is trained on all small equipment.

Sara also brings a variety of other disciplines to her work which have been influenced by NLP (neurolinguistic programming),  Z-health (nervous system training), and somatic movement, providing the participants with a unique experience. Sara’s work caters to a client base ranging from those in the 80’s to pregnant mums.

Sara is particularly passionate about the Pilates machines, as they provide a safe and highly effective way to rapidly recover from injury or pain, and are key to mastering the more advanced mat exercises.

Pilates is an activity that is beneficial and enjoyable for participants from all ages and abilities.

Sara is from Leeds and currently devotes time on Thursdays at MI Pilates for a variety of work with Private Clients and small groups of Fusion Classes (Equipment and Mat work with up to 4 people at a time.)

Prices range from £15.00 an hour for small group Fusion classes to £50.00 an hour for 1:1 Pilates session.

MI Pilates offers group mat and equipment classes that range from beginners to super advanced.

Classes run as early as 8:00 am and as late as 7:30 pm so getting a session in before or after work is a great option.
